Benjamin M. Fortese, Sr., 88, of Dunmore, died Monday evening in the Intensive Care Unit at the Community Medical Center, Scranton. His wife, the former Lillian Jenesky died May 5, 1992.
Born in Dunmore, he was the son of the late Vincenzo and Julia Lupia Pane Fortese and was a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish, Dunmore. He was a WWII Army veteran serving in Europe, England, France, Belgium and Germany and was a 1942 graduate of Dunmore High School. He was employed by Mercy Hospital as a Boiler Engineer prior to retirement.
He was a member of the VFW McHugh-Bushweller Post 3474 and the Sons of Italy, Dunmore. In his earlier years he worked in the Mining Industry for Pagnotti Enterprises and Sproul Construction. He was an avid fisherman and especially enjoyed fishing and gardening with his sons and grandchildren. He enjoyed Italian cooking, music and camping. He was fond of watching his grandchildren in sporting events and was an avid Penn State and Dunmore Buck fan. Benjamin’s favorite holiday was celebrating the 4th of July with family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Surviving are four sons; Benjamin Jr. and wife Ann Marie, Scranton; Gary and wife Catherine, Dunmore; Bruce and wife Sheila, Dunmore and Mark and wife Lori, Dunmore with whom he resided.
One brother; Phillip Fortese and wife Mary, Titusville, Florida
Nine grandchildren; Bonnie Fortese Skilton, Benjamin III and Ashley Fortese; Jessica Fortese Symons, Vincent and Dominick Fortese, Mark Jr., Thomas and Christopher Fortese; Four great-grandchildren; Nicholas Fortese, Dale and Juliana Symon and Bazzil Skilton.
He was preceded in death by three brothers; Samuel and Joseph Pane and James Fortese and four sisters; Philomena Lacertoso, Antoinette Nibblett, Nellie Rovinsky and Carmella Jason.
The funeral will be Friday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony’s Church, Smith St., Dunmore. Interment, St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.
