Anna Mecca Mercuri Gallo, 98, of Dunmore, died Tuesday afternoon at the Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scranton.  She was the widow of the late Dr. Anthony T. Mercuri, Sr., who died in 1963, and the late Vito Gallo.

Born in Dunmore, daughter of the late Dominick J. and Angela  Paris Mecca, she graduated from Dunmore High School and the Bellevue School of Nursing.  She served in the U.S. Navy Nurses Corp during World War II.  Later she received her bachelor’s degree from the former Marywood College.  Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a teacher in the Dunmore School District.  She had a passion for musicals, especially Madame Butterfly, Phantom of the Opera, and Les Miserables.

Surviving are her sons, Dr. Anthony T. Mercuri, Jr. and wife Brenda Pritchard Mercuri, and Paul T. Mercuri, Sr. and wife Deanna Sabbatini Mercuri.  Also, surviving are grandchildren:  Rachel, Anthony III, Katrina, SMSgt. Thomas Longworth, Sarah, Paul Jr., Michael, and Nicole. Surviving great grandchildren: Anthony IV, Giovanni, Brendan, Jannaleah, Bradley, Julianna, Ceiwynn, Xavier and Annabelle; her sister, Marguerite Gibbons; former daughter-in-law Janet Yarosh and husband David; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Sarah Wassel, Christine “Kiki” Riggi, Angelo and D.J. Mecca and grandson, Spc. Dominic Sabbatini. 

 The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the medical staffs at the VA Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, Hospice of the Sacred Heart, and Linwood N&R Center.

The funeral will be Tuesday with mass at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Chestnut St., Dunmore.  Interment to follow in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.

Friends my visit at Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore on Monday from 4:00 – 7:00 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or to Friends of the Forgotten.

Aunt Anna you will be missed so much ,loved hearing your stories of the WWII and the depression ,there is alot I learned from you,you were like a mother to me.
