Anthony L. “Taps” Cantafio, 67, of Scranton, died Monday at Geisinger-Community Medical Center in Scranton following an injury. He and his wife of over 40 years, the former Joanne McCormick, were married on July 24, 1976.
Born in Scranton, son of Mary Gatto Cantafio of Dunmore and the late Louis Cantafio, he was a graduate of Dunmore High School Class of 1966, and went on to Mansfield University where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in education. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a math teacher at Scranton Preparatory School for 31 years, and had additionally served as one of its baseball coaches and school sports statistician. He had even coached his children and followed as a coach for his grandson’s T-ball team. He was a member of St. Paul’s Parish in Scranton, and the American Legion Post 908 on Deacon Street in Scranton.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother ,uncle, nephew and friend who was also dedicated to the success of the students and athletes he mentored.
Also surviving are his sons, Anthony Michael Cantafio and wife Jamie of Olyphant, and Christopher Thomas Cantafio of Scranton; grandsons, Luke and Alex Cantafio who were the light of his life, his sisters, Concetta Toman and husband Bob of Dunmore, and Pauline Randolph and husband Wayne of Bangor, PA; his brother, Vince Cantafio of Dunmore; an aunt, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a nephew, Robert Louis Toman.
The funeral will be Friday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Paul’s Church 1510 Penn Ave., Scranton. Interment will be in the Dunmore Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the church on Thursday from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. All those attending the mass are kindly asked to go directly to the church on Friday morning.
In lieu of flowers , preferred memorial contributions in the name of Anthony L. “Taps” Cantafio may be made to Scranton Preparatory School, 1000 Wyoming Ave., Scranton, PA 18509.
