Asher Melvin Schwartz, an Old Forge native and currently of Scranton, died Monday morning in the Moses Taylor Hospital. His wife is the former Leah Lola Weintraub.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, son of the late William and Bertha Simkowitz Schwartz, he was a graduate of Old Forge High School and St. Thomas College, presently known as the University of Scranton. A U.S. Army Veteran, he served as a supply sergeant during World War II and was Quartermaster of the Old Forge VFW Post#4954 for over 45 years. Prior to retirement, he was the co-owner of Schwartz Men’s Shop in Old Forge, a family business for many years. He was a member of the Bichor Cholem Congregation in Old Forge and Beth Shalom Congregation in Scranton, in addition to the Masonic Lodge.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother Allen Schwartz.
The funeral will be today precisely at 1 p.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with services by Rabbi Yisroel Brotsky and Rabbi Dovid Saks. Interment in the Dalton Jewish Cemetery. The family will receive friends during shiva at the residence, 515 Clay Ave., this evening from 7-9 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Friday 1-3 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
