Francis A. Burne, Sr.

Francis A. Burne, Sr., 92, of the Green Ridge section of Scranton passed over peacefully at home on Friday morning. He was preceded in death by his wife the former Catherine “Kitty” Gilday who at the age of thirty was stricken ill which made Fran a stronger partner in the raising of their four small children.  Kitty passed away on October 25, 1977. The couple had been married for 35 years.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late James R. and Florence Burne and was a 1939 graduate of Central High School. He was a member of St. Paul’s Church, Scranton and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was the owner –operator with his brother Richard “Dick” Burne of the family owned Burne
automobile franchises  for more than sixty years and was  a star member of the Oldsmobile Salesmaker Club.

Fran had a warm affectionate smile and had a great love for his nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was fondly named“Poppi Cookie” by his great-granddaughter Keira for the sweet treats he would always have for the children to their delight. Wanting little for himself he was a giving father who never wanted a “thank you” in return. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Sacred Heart and all of his care givers especially Patti, Posie, Denise, Gina, Karen and Sandy for all of their care, compassion and overwhelming support during Fran’s illness.

When Chris called to tell me Fran was gone, although I realize his suffering is over, it saddened me. My heart goes out to the Burne family for your sorrow at his loss is just beginning. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

It is hard to believe Chris and I have been friends for more years than either of us are willing to admit and I never met Fran until recently. Chris asked if I would help care for him. On the few occasions I shared his company I found myself wishing I had known him while he was the vibrant active man I could see he once was. Every experience I had with Fran was a joy. He was a wonderful, kind, and gentle man. I am grateful for what little time I had with him.

Chris, I love you and if you need me I'm a phone call away. May God bless all of you.
