John Joseph Nicosia, Sr., 87, of Jermyn and a former Dunmore resident, died early Friday in the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit in Dunmore.
Born in Dunmore, son of the late Salvatore and Catalda Catherine Naro Nicosia, he was a graduate of Dunmore High School, and prior to retirement, he had been employed by Linder Brothers Company of Scranton and New York City, in addition to Specialty Records in Olyphant. He was very proud of his Italian heritage, and was a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore. He was a sports enthusiast and an avid fan of the New York Yankees, and in his younger years, he had been an outstanding baseball player. He also enjoyed and was a renown local bowler belonging to numerous leagues.. John was devoted to his family, and was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and uncle and enjoyed time spent together.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit and Peggy Trently his senior companion for the wonderful care provided to John in his time of need.
Surviving is a son, John Joseph Nicosia Jr, and his companion, Leslie Piechota, Jermyn, two daughters, Nicole Guy and Judi Nicosia both of Scranton; five grandchildren, Michael Nicosia, Isaiah Jolly, Xavier Guy, Niamora Guy and Mirabella Nicosia; a sister Isabella Bonavoglia, Dunmore; and a brother, Michael Nicosia, Las Vegas, Nevada; several nieces and nephews including Kathleen Nicosia Coyne, Scranton, who was much like a daughter to him.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Grace Biagiona and four brothers, Salvatore, Cataldo (Carl), Joseph and Anthony.
The funeral will be Tuesday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with mass at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith St., Dunmore. Entombment will follow in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.
