John Joseph Murphy, Jr., 61, of Dunmore, died Tuesday morning in the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit in Dunmore. He and his wife, the former Catherine Lenahan, would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on March 7th.
Born in Concordia, Kansas, to John Joseph Sr. and Retha Rose Wheeler Murphy of Scranton, he was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School class of 1970 and entered the U.S. Navy later that year and served as a radioman in the Panama Canal Zone. He went on to graduate from Penn State University in 1977, where he studied journalism and earned a bachelor’s degree in English. In 1981, he joined the Scranton Times as a correspondent and later advanced to staff writer, when in the late 1990’s, John was promoted to regional editor, then city editor, and metro editor. It was in December of 2000 that he advanced to assistant managing editor. He was known to his associates as being incredibly passionate about journalism and the newspaper, and to be exceedinly fair to all. Outside of work, John was an avid golfer and Penn State Football fan and was deeply devoted to his loving family, especially his grandchildren. who lovingly called him Bapa.
Also surviving is a daughter, Shannon Murphy Fennie and husband Michael, Jr. of Dunmore; a son, Jack Murphy and fiancée Ariele Garofalo of Philadelphia; grandchildren Gavin Michael, Catherine Nora, and Keegan John Fennie; sisters Jan Scott and husband Theirn of Lawrenceville, GA; Bernadette Kennedy and husband Bernard of Medford, MA, and Tara Cummings and husband John of Dunmore; brothers Michael Murphy of Scranton, Patrick Murphy and wife Patricia of Scranton; and Brian Murphy of Asheville, NC; thirteen nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Chestnut St., Dunmore. Friends may Thursday evening at the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, from 4-7 p.m.
All those attending the mass are asked to go directly to the church. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
