In Loving Memory of Mary Ann Genello
Mary Ann GenelloDunmore, PA January 30, 1929 ~ September 19, 2017 Date of Service: September 23, 2017
Mrs. Mary Ann Genello, 88, Dunmore, was called home by the Lord on Tuesday night, Sept. 19, 2017, after a brief illness. Her husband of 52 years, William J. Genello, preceded her in death on Nov. 21, 2007.
Mrs. Genello, the former Mary Ann Caterino, was the daughter of the late Emil and Lena Palucci Caterino. She was raised in South Scranton, above her father's well-known shoe repair shop on Cedar Avenue. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish and educated in the parish elementary and high schools.
Mary Ann had an angelic voice and was cast in lead roles in school musicals. She often was asked to sing at family weddings and other gatherings. Her love of music and the theater continued into her later years, as she favored classic movies and television shows.
Mary Ann was a woman of beauty and class; she had a pleasant disposition and was a very caring person. She made friends easily and they were friends for life. Friendships formed in her childhood were forged throughout the years via exchanges of cards and letters.
Mary Ann had great faith and, true to her name, great devotion to the Blessed Mother and St. Ann. She attended St. Ann's Novena every year and passed on that tradition to her family.
She worked for a time at Commercial Credit in Scranton. After her marriage to Bill on Sept. 24, 1955, she assumed the supremely rewarding role of raising a family. That was her true vocation.
Mary Ann was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. We were truly blessed to have such a special person in our lives. While we miss her beyond words, we are also consoled by the firm belief that, guided by the light and hand of Christ, she is now on a peaceful journey to her eternal reward.
She is survived by her three sons, William R. Genello, Dunmore, and his companion, Nancy Donrovich, Jessup; Martin E. Genello and his wife, Lisa, Dunmore, and their daughter, Ellen, Dunmore, and son Martin, Swarthmore, Pa.; John G. Genello and his wife, Mei, Arlington, Va; her sister, Louise Constable and her husband, Lou, Dunmore. Also surviving are nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 23, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 303 Smith St., Dunmore. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are by the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore. Visitation is Friday, Sept. 22, 4-8 p.m.
One of Mary Ann's missions in life was to ensure that everyone was well fed. And if not at her table, she always advised, "Make sure you have a good lunch!" To honor that spirit, memorial donations may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen, 500 Penn Ave., Scranton 18509.
